Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

On December 7–8, 2021 Gazprom VNIIGAZ held the VII International Scientific and Technical Conference «Environmental Safety in the Gas Industry» (ESGI-2021). The conference passed in a hybrid (online/offline) format. The combination of traditional face-to-face format of the scientific and technical event with modern means of online communication allowed to increase the audience substantially.

The plenary session of the Conference was opened with greetings by Oleg Aksyutin, Deputy Chairman of the Management Committee — Head of Department of PJSC Gazprom. Mr. Aksyutin mentioned that reducing environmental impact was a key factor of Gazprom's sustainable development, its competitiveness and investment appeal. Natural gas is the cleanest energy resource which is one of the most environmentally friendly ways of reducing the negative impact on the environment and decarbonizing the economy.

Deputy Head of Department of PJSC Gazprom, General Director of Gazprom VNIIGAZ Maksim Nedzvetsky performed with welcome speech.

Mr. Nedzvetsky paid attention to the guideline of oil and gas companies as an effective solution of urgent problems of sustainable and environmentally safe development of the oil and gas industry, energy saving, and improving energy efficiency of technological facilities.

The Conference delegates were also welcomed by Olga Plyamina, General Director of the Vernadsky Non-Governmental Environmental Fund.

Alexander Ishkov, Deputy Head of Department — Head of Management of PJSC Gazprom, Holder of an Advanced Doctorate in Chemical Science, Professor. Mr. Ishkov made a detailed report dedicated to the present issues of environmental policy and climate agenda. The first day of the event included 16 presentations on the most important problems of the global environmental agenda.

The second day started with four Technical sessions which covered the wide range of issues: environmental safety to modern biotechnologies; energy efficiency and energy saving to climate risks; low-carbon economy and hydrogen energy perspectives and others.

More than 60 scientific presentations were made during the two — days Conference, the total number of delegates exceeded 250 people. 123 companies from 5 countries attended ESGI-2021.

A large number of questions from full-time and online delegates, heated discussions between speakers and moderators, active and open exchange of views on the most topical environmental issues once again confirmed the relevance and great demand of the ESGI-2021 Conference.
